Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading Practicum I  is comprised of 45 hours of coursework plus 12 supervised practicum sessions. In summer courses, this practicum is held at a summer school and participants tutor students using Orton-Gillingham lessons they develop under guidance/supervision of a master teacher. In courses held during the school-year, the practicum participants tutor one of their own students completing a minimum of sixteen lessons under the guidance/supervision of a master teacher who visits their site twelve times.

This Orton-Gillingham course focuses on the phonology, orthography and structure of the English language; takes a comprehensive look at how students learn to read and write; and helps teachers to recognize the characteristics of learning disabilities. Teachers learn to plan and implement systematic, explicit, multisensory language instruction that meets the guidelines of the National Reading Panel and has been proven to be most effective in teaching students with Dyslexia and other reading difficulties. Teacher also learn how to incorporate Orton-Gillingham methodology into their core reading program.

After completion of  Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading Practicum I, participants are highly encouraged to register for Advanced Multisensory Reading Practicum II to receive additional coaching support which will enable them to adapt Orton-Gillingham instruction to their classroom setting and to qualify for Orton-Gillingham certification at the Teaching Level.

To achieve Certification at the Teaching Level, educators must complete Practicum I with a grade of B or higher and successfully Practicum II (documenting 60 hours of Orton-Gillingham instruction with lesson plans and student work over a minimum of 9 months meeting standards for implementation). For more information about IMSLEC-Accredited Certification at the Teaching Level, please contact us.

Three semester hours graduate credit from Mount St. Joseph University is available.

Audience:

PreK- 12 educators, speech/language pathologists, and intervention specialists

Prerequisites:

An undergraduate degree is required and a strong background in phonological awareness and phonics is recommended.

Dates, Times & Location:

Classes are held at Mayerson Academy on the following dates and times: 

  • June 4-7, 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM
  • June 10-13, 17-24, 24-26, 8:00 AM - 3:30:PM Morning sessions at school locations
  • June 27, 8:00 AM Final Exam

The practicum is scheduled at participant's own site at times agreed upon with the OG Master Teacher.

Cost:

$1299 (including materials) for 100 contact hours (summer course) or 70 contact hours (school-year course) from Mayerson Academy.

The cost of this course has been greatly reduced through generous grants from the Smale Family and Charles H. Dater Foundations.

3 hours of graduate credit is available through Mount St. Joseph University. This course fulfills the practicum requirement (RDG 591) for Mount St. Joseph University's Reading Science program.
