Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading Practicum I - June 2020
Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading Practicum I is comprised of 45 hours of coursework plus 12 supervised practicum sessions. In summer courses, this practicum is held at a summer school and participants tutor students using Orton-Gillingham lessons they develop under guidance/supervision of a master teacher. In courses held during the school-year, the practicum participants tutor one of their own students completing a minimum of sixteen lessons under the guidance/supervision of a master teacher who visits their site twelve times.
This Orton-Gillingham course focuses on the phonology, orthography and structure of the English language; takes a comprehensive look at how students learn to read and write; and helps teachers to recognize the characteristics of dyslexia and other learning disabilities. Teachers learn to plan and implement systematic, explicit, multisensory language instruction that meets the guidelines of the National Reading Panel and has been proven to be most effective in teaching students with Dyslexia and other reading difficulties. Teacher also learn how to incorporate Orton-Gillingham methodology into their core reading program.

After completion of Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading Practicum I, participants are highly encouraged to register for Advanced Multisensory Reading Practicum II to receive additional coaching support which will enable them to adapt Orton-Gillingham instruction to their classroom setting and to qualify for Orton-Gillingham certification at the Teaching Level.
To achieve Certification at the Teaching Level, educators must complete Practicum I with a grade of B or higher and successfully Practicum II (documenting 60 hours of Orton-Gillingham instruction with lesson plans and student work over a minimum of 9 months meeting standards for implementation). Three semester hours graduate credit from Mount St. Joseph University is available.

An undergraduate degree is required and a strong background in phonological awareness and phonics is recommended.

$1499 (including materials) for 90 contact hours (summer course) from Mayerson Academy.
